Mr. G: An Active Recovery
Mr. G, 49, was admitted to Kindred Hospital St. Louis in August after being diagnosed with rectal cancer at a short-term acute care hospital the previous April.

After a lengthy regime of chemotherapy and an extensive surgery, Mr. G returned home from the traditional hospital in June. But after only four days at home, even with support from home health care, Mr. G returned to the emergency room and was readmitted to the hospital.
His surgeons were not sure what else could be done for him and so they referred him to Kindred Hospital St. Louis for an extended stay and continued wound care for his large surgical incision.
Mr. G and his family members were very discouraged when the initial recommendation of Kindred was made because they had been away from their home for over a month. But after meeting the Kindred clinical liaison and discussing Mr. G’s continual needs, he and his family agreed Kindred could deliver the care he needed to get home.
Once Mr. G was admitted to Kindred, his family visited every day and became very involved in his plan of care. They attended patient care conferences and actively discussed his treatment plan with his physicians and healthcare providers. With encouragement, Mr. G participated in his own pain management, which was important to his recovery. Once Mr. G successfully managed his pain, he again became the person he was before his cancer diagnosis in April.
During Mr. G’s hospitalization at Kindred Hospital St. Louis our team worked closely with Mr. G’s surgeon. Mr. G‘s infections, pain levels, and nutritional status improved and he was capable of participating in rehab.
With his surgical incision healing and pain management controlled he was discharged from Kindred Hospital St. Louis that December, able to walk out the front doors!
All of the staff at Kindred Hospital St. Louis wish Mr. G and his family a continued recovery at his home.
